Toyota FJ Cruiser

Vehicle Overview

Meet the King of the hill, valley, rock, stream, mud, sand, snow and ice - the new FJ Cruiser from Toyota Canada. The culmination of a half-century of truck know-how and steady advances in technology, Toyota FJ Cruiser is as rough and ready as its legendary namesake, the FJ40 Landcruiser, but with some tricks all its own. Available in two bruising models: a 5-speed Automatic with shift-on-the-fly 4-Wheel Drive and a 6-speed Manual featuring true Full-Time 4-Wheel Drive. Both pack a powerful V6 and are available in three extremely well-equipped Grades, including a brand-new Offroad Package.

Exterior

Forty years ago, FJ40 Landcruiser stalked the world, setting new standards for off-road durability and capability. The legend lives on, in the form of the all-new FJ Cruiser. FJ's exterior pays homage to its storied predecessor; but look beyond the sheet metal and you'll see the FJ is clearly intent on carving out an identity - and legend - all of it's own. A prime example of Toyota's philosophy of continuous improvement - using past successes to establish new and better benchmarks.

Dimensions

With a relatively short but notably wide body, FJ's stance is as stable in execution as it is powerful in expression. Short overhangs - front and rear - provide exceptional approach, departure and breakover angles [see Handling]. and, with the bulk of weight firmly between the front and rear axles, FJ is extremely adept at navigating tight spots and even tighter corners.

Platforms

FJ rides on the same platform as Toyota's world-renowned Landcruiser Prado [4Runner]. Modified to add 210 mm to its length, the platform features a tough, fully-boxed frame with seven cross-members, full underbody protective coating, and solid skid armor in all the right places.

Heritage Styling

FJ pays homage to its legendary namesake with a series of styling cues unique to the original, including: round headlamps; elongated grille with ''Toyota'' badging; near upright windscreen; white cap; and wrap-around tail lamps.

Tires

Off-road, size matters. FJ puts power to the ground with standard, all-terrain 32'' Meats wrapped around 17'' Alloy Wheels. Blacked out wheel wells give FJ's exterior a little growl, to go along with the prowl. All packages include a Full-size Spare with Alloy Wheel. Mud & Snow Raised White Letter Tires come as options and as part of the Offroad Package.

Access Doors

FJ's Rear Access Doors open wide - almost 90° - for easy entry and exit or loading and unloading.

Body Armour

FJ's aggressive stance is augmented by sturdy resin Bumpers with Bumper Extenders up front, Overfenders and Blacked Out Side Window Frames. Underbody armor includes Skid Plates for the Engine, Transfer Case and Fuel Tank.

Interior

The new FJ Cruiser is as rough and ready inside as it is out - a tool-like utility that can be seen, felt and experienced in the stylish appearance of the Instrument Panel, the wide use of Water Repellant Materials and the large, flexible Cargo Area. At the same time, FJ brings to the table its share of comfort, convenience and just plain cool features and functions - including a truly unique and totally awesome ''Club Sound'' Audio System.

Instrument Panel

The Instrument Panel is the unquestioned focal point of a vehicle's interior - and FJ's is worthy of special attention. Dual horizontal pipes run the length of the Panel and frame the Inset Instrumentation. The Colour-Keyed Trim surrounding the AC and Audio Controls reinforces the mechanical, tool-like feel of the interior.

Cargo Space

FJ was purpose-built to go most anywhere and enable owners to do most anything. So, it should come as no surprise that FJ's multiple seating arrangements offer up ample Cargo Space for anything from a couple of Mountain Bikes to a 10' long Surfboard. A variety of well-placed Hooks and Tie-downs ensure that everything stays in place when the going gets rough.

Active Wear

If it's sandy, muddy, snow-bound or wet outside, then it's going to end up sandy, muddy and wet on the inside. That's life off-road. It's also why FJ features Water Repellant Seat Upholstery that readily sheds liquids and a Cargo Deck that's slightly canted for easier clean-up.

Engine

The new FJ Cruiser's 239 Horsepower, trail-tuned V6 has the torque to get you going, the horsepower to keep you going and a rugged drivetrain that delivers power to maximum effect when and where it's needed. That's what off-roading demands and what FJ supplies - by the truck load.

4.0 Litre V6

Both the 5-Speed Automatic and 6-Speed Manual are driven by a 4.0 Litre, 24-Valve, DOHC V6 Engine that churns out 239 Horsepower and generates 278 lb-ft of Torque at 3,800 RPM. Aided and abetted by Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence, Sequential Multi-port Fuel Injection, an Acoustic Control Induction System and Electronic Throttle Control with Intelligence, FJ's V6 is also extremely sophisticated, simultaneously improving performance, increasing fuel efficiency and lowering emissions.

Drivetrain

The 6-speed Manual features a true, full-time 4-Wheel Drive system, complete with Centre Diff Lock, Rear Diff Lock and 2-speed transfer case. In combination with standard Vehicle Stability Control [VSC] and Traction Control [TRAC] there is little ground that FJ can't claw through, clamber over or flat out conquer. The Offroad and “C” Packages brings Active Traction Control [ATRAC] for a little extra 'get up and go anywhere' traction capability

Transmission

FJ's Transmission comes in two bold flavours: a Gated-shift Six-speed Manual or a Gated-shift Five-speed Automatic with Super ECT [Electronically Controlled Transmission].

Transfer Case

The 6-speed Manual comes with a true 4-Wheel Drive System featuring a 2-speed Transfer Case. At its heart is a TorsenTM [torque sensing] Limited Slip Centre Differential with a locking feature. Under normal driving conditions, the engine power is channeled as follows: 40 percent to the front axle and 60 percent to the rear - altering the distribution as needed, based on steering angle and wheel slippage. When locked, power is distributed 50-50 front and rear.

Rear Differential

FJ also offers a Locking Rear Differential for active side-to-side torque control. The Differential features an Electric Actuated Locking Mechanism that is activated via a Dash-Mounted Switch. The Locking Rear Differential is standard on Manual models and available on Automatic models.

Fuel Capacity

Fuel efficiency isn't the first thing that comes to mind when most people think of off-roading. But, when you're well and truly off the beaten path, getting the most out of every litre is critical to the return journey home. FJ is one of the most fuel conscious of its kind. Manual transmission models use 14.5 litres/100 km in the city and 11.2 on the highway. Automatic transmission models use 13.5 litres/100 km in the city and 10.2 on the highway. FJ's 72 litre Fuel Tank Capacity also gives you the ability to range far and wide with greater confidence.

Notable Mentions - Muffler

Technically speaking, the Muffler isn't part of the Drivetrain - more like the duodenum of FJ's beastly guts. But, the simple fact that it's been specifically tuned to give FJ an appropriate growl makes it too cool not to mention. Think of it as the call of the wild.

Handling

Rocks. Mud. Sand. Snow. Ice. Water. Pick a terrain. Choose a challenge. The new FJ Cruiser has what it takes to help get you up, over, through or around virtually any obstacle that nature - or your own imagination - throws your way.

Suspension

Up front, FJ employs an Independent Double-Wishbone Suspension with Coil Springs, Gas Shocks and Stabilizer Bar. The suspension is mounted high to deliver 7.87'' of travel and to protect components from the hard reality of off-road exploration. With each wheel able to react independently and remain more upright, FJ has the grip to get up and over serious off-road terrain. The set-up also contributes to FJ's smooth ride for those times when you're forced to travel paved roads.

Tires

Meats. Cleats. Good old fashioned wheels. Call 'em what you will, FJ has the goods. 32'' All-Seasons strapped to 17'' Alloys. The large wheel stroke contributes to FJ's high ground clearance, excellent approach and departure angles and fording performance.

Traction Control

FJ boasts TRAC [Toyota's Traction Control System] as standard fare on all models to control wheel spin, especially on slippery surfaces. Sensors continuously monitor the rotational speed of each wheel. If the system detects that one or more wheels are starting to slip, the engine's Computer Control Unit automatically adjusts throttle accordingly while the Brake Actuator directs the braking force to the most appropriate wheel or wheels until traction is restored

Safety

What does "Big Foot" have to do with safety? Absolutely nothing. We just liked the sound of it. But, rest assured, the new FJ Cruiser is "big" on safety [Ed: sorry about the segue], helping to keep you in control in difficult situations and keep you safe if a situation is out of your control.

Body Structure

FJ's rock solid Frame is complemented by a highly rigid, High-tensile Steel Body. FJ's doors and side panels are, in particular, a work of structural art - strategically reinforced at key points from the A to the C Pillars to create a rigid steel cage capable of first absorbing and then distributing impact energy around and away from the passenger cabin.

Airbags

Standard on all models, Dual-stage Front Airbags for driver and front passenger, Front Seat Mounted Side Airbags and Curtain Shield Airbags. Protection all around, the result of Toyota's commitment to make driving - off-road or on - safer.

Brakes

FJ features large Disc Brakes - 16" in the front and 15" in the rear. Both sets are ventilated for long-life and fade-free performance. Just the start of an extensive and impressive array of braking technology standard on all models and the product of Toyota's commitment to continuous improvement.
