Toyota recently released the 2011 North America Environmental Report (NAER), a seriously in-depth report outlining all the ways Toyota reduced its impact on the environment during 2012.
The intensive report is 66 pages long and discusses 7 main aspects of Toyota's environmental awareness: Environmental Vision and Action, Energy and Climate Change, Recycling and Resource Management, Air Quality, Environmental Management, Cooperation with Society, and North American Presence.
We enjoyed reading the report and learning new tidbits of information about Toyota, such as:
? Toyota has awarded over $700,000 in scholarships to Canadian students through our partnership with Earth Day Canada.
? For over 10 years, Toyota has partnered with Evergreen to help schools across Canada create inviting natural play spaces with outdoor learning environments.
? Toyota set a target to achieve near-zero waste to landfill (measured annually as a 95% or greater reduction in waste to landfill, averaged across our North American plants). This target was achieved each of the last three years.
Portland State University is tracking the percentage of time the PHV s (Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles) are operating in all electric mode. One key benefit of the Prius Plug-in is that the alternative to the electric mode is a conventional hybrid, which is high on fuel economy and low on tailpipe emissions." Image from here.
"Our parts center in Ontario, California, installed a photovoltaic array that is expected to produce more than 3.7 million kilowatthours per year. This provides almost 58% of the electricity needed at the facility." Image from here.
We at Lethbridge Toyota are so proud of our Toyota heritage! Toyota is a forward-thinking automotive brand, and we are proud to stand behind a company that works so hard to keep our planet clean and safe.

With over 30 entries and more than 7,000 votes on our Facebook contest page, L'Arche Lethbridge faced stiff competition. The 2000 Sienna minivan, along with 2 years of free detailing, 2 years of free oil changes, and a $500 service credit, was awarded to L'Arche Lethbridge, who won the contest with over 3,000 votes.
Access to affordable and reliable transportation is a huge
limiting factor for many people with disabilities. Winning the Sienna minivan
will provide the developmentally disabled members of the third L'Arche home the
same access to transportation that the rest of us usually take for granted.
Voting for L'Arche Lethbridge is also a vote for the environment! Because the
assistants mostly come 'from away,' they do not bring their own vehicle. This
means that the 8 adults in L'Arche Lethbridge homes share one vehicle ? an
adult to vehicle ratio that's pretty hard to beat when it comes to reducing
greenhouse gas emissions.
Congratulations, L'Arche Lethbridge!

If you are looking for a reliable car, don't assume that certain brands are always shoe-ins. Each manufacturer has models that have a range of reliability in Consumer Reports' annual car reliability survey.
When shopping for a car, it's best to look at individual models and not make assumptions based on brand perceptions. In addition, just because a vehicle scored well in our reliability survey doesn't mean it's recommended by CR or a good vehicle to buy.
Some models are reliable, but don't do well in our testing. One example is the Jeep Patriot, which had the best reliability for Jeep, but scores too low in our testing to be recommended. Alternatively, the Audi Q5 scores very high in our tests, but its reliability is well below average, so we cannot recommend it.
There are also disparities within brands. Some manufacturers have very good reliability within all its models across the board, but we've seen that list drop from seven consistent brands last year to only two this year. Only Scion, Acura, and Mazda do not have any models that have below-average reliability. Others like BMW and Mercedes-Benz have some that score very high and others that are well below average.
Below is a list of the best and worst vehicles by brand based on predicted reliability. Models with an asterisk ("*") are based on data for one model year only.
| Make | Worst model | Best model |
| Scion | xB | xD |
| Lexus | IS Convertible* | CT 200h* |
| Acura | TSX | TL (FWD) |
| Mazda | CX-9 | MX-5 Miata |
| Honda | Odyssey* | CR-Z* |
| Toyota | Sienna (AWD)* | Highlander (4-cyl.) |
| Infiniti | G Convertible | QX56* |
| Subaru | Tribeca* | Forester (non-turbo) |
| Nissan | Z | Titan* |
| Volvo | XC90* | C70* |
| Hyundai | Santa Fe (V6) | Elantra Wagon |
| Kia | Sedona | Optima* |
| Jeep | Wrangler (4-door) | Patriot |
| Lincoln | MKX (FWD)* | MKZ Hybrid* |
| Chrysler | Town & Country | 200* |
| Volkswagen | Routan | Golf TDI |
| Chevrolet | Silverado 2500* | Volt* |
| Mercedes-Benz | GL-Class | C-Class (RWD) |
| BMW | 550i* | X3* |
| Ford | Edge (AWD)* | Fusion Hybrid |
| Dodge | Ram 2500 (turbodiesel) | Caliber |
| GMC | Sierra 2500* | Sierra 1500 (V6, 2WD) |
| Mini | Cooper Clubman S | Cooper Hatchback |
| Buick | LaCrosse (AWD)* | Enclave (FWD) |
| Cadillac | Escalade* | CTS (V6, RWD) |
| Audi | Q5 (V6) | A4 (4-cyl.) |
| Porsche | Cayenne* | 911* |
| Jaguar | XF | XJ* |
As these results show, it is unwise to judge a book by its cover. Avoid assumptions based on past history or anecdotal experience. Instead, do your research before you buy your next vehicle. It takes just a few minutes to browse the model overview pages, or use the interactive new car selector tool, which sorts and filters by the parameters that matter most to you.
Either path will reveal Consumer Reports recommended models that did well in our road tests, score average or better in reliability, and perform at least adequately if included in government or insurance industry safety tests.

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. ? A U.S. federal jury found that Toyota Motor Corp. isn't responsible for a 2005 crash that the driver blamed on the floor mat or the electronic throttle, in the first case to go to trial since automaker recalled millions of its vehicles.
After 45 minutes of deliberation, the jury found Toyota was not liable for product liability for the Scion's floor mat or for the absence of a system that allows the brake to override the accelerator when both are pressed.
The car's driver, 59-year-old Long Island physician Amir Sitafalwala, contended that defects in the electronic throttle system or the floor mats caused him to suddenly accelerate and crash into a tree. U.S. Magistrate Judge E. Thomas Boyle ruled out evidence about the car's electronics earlier this week.
Sitafalwala's 2008 lawsuit was the first to go to trial since Toyota recalled millions of vehicles beginning in 2009.
In a written statement, Toyota called the verdict an "early indicator of the strength of the legal theories behind unintended acceleration claims'' against it.
"We believe that this case sets an important benchmark for unintended acceleration litigation against Toyota across this country,'' the statement said.
